Well, the title says it all. I didn’t spend any money today. Neither did The Daughter. Yippie!

- Happy Veteran’s Day
Happy Veteran’s Day!
May I take a moment to express my gratitude to all who have served to preserve the freedoms that my family and I enjoy.
The Husband is actually a DAV (disabled American veteran) though he never served active duty. His injury was sustained States-side.
The kids have always thought it fun that their dad is a DAV.
Now, on to my only expense of the day:
Pediatric Orthopedic office — $50.00
Yet another co-pay incurred as a result of The Son breaking his left clavicle.
The good news is that today’s x-rays revealed a great deal of new bone growth.
The bad news, at least as far as The Son is concerned, is that he’s still limited in the activities in which he can participate. He desperately wants to be able to transfer from the Leadership class he’s in right now back to the Physical Ed class he originally signed up for. He’s never actually been to the Phys Ed class because the injury happened during lunch — just before the very first Phys Ed class. Apparently the class is scheduled to go ice skating for the next several weeks. The Dr. say absolutely NO ice skating. Also, no football. No rock climbing. No bike riding. And no basketball.
He may swim. He may play volleyball but only if he serves underhand.
And he needs to complete 4 to 6 weeks of physical therapy to regain FROM (which I learned today means full range of motion). Clever huh? Why do I get the feeling this is going to be yet another expensive medical experience?
We have an appointment to go back to the Pediatric Orthopedic Dr. one last time — four weeks from now.

I’ve been feeling sick for well over a week but today my body took it to a whole new level. I’m a little concerned that I have an infection of some type — about 12:30 today I realized I was in a great deal of pain. [Now I'm no hero immune to pain but honestly after four years of living with Fibromyalgia, I have learned to block out pain levels that in earlier years would have brought me to my knees.]
Thinking the pain might be related to a lack of sleep (my bad cough has made sleeping difficult), I went to lie down hoping for a nap. But I simply could not lie still. My body was wracked with nearly unbearable pain, I was shivering violently, and I was feeling almost pathologically restless, simply unable to sit or lie down in one position for more than a minute. I paced and shivered and moaned. I also took three Advil. Gradually, after about an hour of pacing, I was able to sit on the couch and eventually fell asleep for about 15 minutes.
The one symptom I haven’t had is a fever but that by no means indicates that I don’t have an infection. I can only think of one occasion in the past few years; I didn’t even run a fever a few years ago when it was discovered I had a severe strep throat infection.
Naturally, I didn’t leave the house and thus spent no money. In an increasing trend, The Daughter spent money — both at my request and at her own pleasure.

I’m still feeling like dog barf so I sent the kids to church by themselves this morning. There really are great advantages to having a child with a driver’s license.
When they got back, The Son elected to stay home to play on the computer and complete some chores (including cleaning the kids’ toilet and his room). The Daughter had to come as hers was the main errand we needed to run.
Costco — $3.00 (cash)
Pizza and a soda for The Daughter’s lunch.
Costco — $5.38
Passport photos of The Daughter. She hopes to do a foreign exchange block this year in a Spanish-speaking country. Since getting a passport can take a while, I wanted to get this part of it done asap.
Did you know that passport application fees are $100!?! I had considered getting passports for all four of us (mine expired over 20 years ago, The Husband has never had one) but when I found out how much they cost, we decided to just get The Daughter’s at this time.
Costco — $88.60
- case of Propel — $10.89 (I really hate the fact that I let The Daughter buy this cr*p)
- box of Goldfish – $6.19
- box of assorted Frito Lay snacks — $10.45 (The Daughter takes these in her bag lunches)
- Taster’s Choice coffee — $10.99
- case of Nature’s Path organic toaster pastries — $7.99
- 24-pk of AAA batteries — $11.39
- 36-pk of AA batteries — $13.69
- 8-pk of 9v batteries — $13.99
Target — $97.29
- Green Works toilet bowl cleaner — $2.59
- Jergens lotion — $1.89*
- Jergens lotion — $5.64*
- Pantene shampoo — $3.79*
- Pantene conditioner — $3.79*
- Goody hair bands — $2.19**
- Conair 2-brush pack — $5.99**
- Conair rollers — $9.99**
- Vicks humidifier — $29.99
- 2 Kaz humidifier filters — $6.14/ea.
* chosen by The Daughter; paid for by me
** chosen by The Daughter; charged against her monthly clothing/costmetics allowance
Kohl’s — $8.39
I’m looking for a pair of PJs to give The Husband’s handicapped son for his upcoming birthday. The Daughter never needs an excuse to look at the sales racks in the junior’s department. I struck out; she didn’t.
- sweater — $6.00
- knit top — $1.80
This purchase, as with all of her clothing purchases, will be deducted from her monthly clothing/cosmetics allowance.

A New Look

Hi, Readers! My Daily Dollar Diary has a new look. I’m sure I’ll be tweaking and adjusting for a while.
What do you think? Honest constructive criticism is welcome.
$$: Cases of Lemonade & Fuel

Not only am I SWI (shopping while impaired) but I’m also sick. I’ve completely lost my voice, my throat is killing me, and I ache! Boy do I ache.
So the last thing I felt like doing was leaving the house to go shopping. Too bad for me we were completely out of milk. Running out of milk is an absolute no-no in this house. I always eat Kashi cereal for breakfast/brunch. Plus, I had a bank deposit to make.
Vitamin Cottage — $166.69
- gallon of Horizon organic 2% milk — $5.19
- six tins of Crown Prince smoked oysters — $1.89/ea. (on sale)
- 4# Horizon salted butter — $3.59/ea. (on sale)
- two cans of Santa Barbara green olives — $2.85/ea. ( a guilty pleasure of mine)
- two bags of Ricola Cherry Mint cough drops — $1.99/ea.
- two rolls of Ricola Cherry Mint cough drops — $0.85/ea.
- three rolls of Ricola herbal throat drops — $0.85/ea.
- three cases (36 bottles) of Santa Cruz organic limeade — $0.99/ea.
- six cases (72 bottles) of Santa Cruz organic lemonade — $0.99/ea.
The Husband is a huge fan of the Santa Cruz limeade. The Son and I are pretty big fans of the lemonade. The Santa Cruz juices are downright delicious and every summer they go on sale. But I haven’t seen a $0.99 per-bottle price for about three years. And every summer I majorly stock up. A few weeks ago, we ran out. Drank our whole stock of lemonade, limeade, strawberry lemonade, and raspberry lemonade.
Did I mention that The Husband loves the limeade? He loves it so much that earlier this week he requested that I pick up a bottle — no matter the price. So, as soon as I left the store I called my love on his cell phone and told him about how I’d scored him 3 cases of the stuff. He was thrilled. He was even more thrilled tonight when I informed him that it turned out we had 4 cases of limeade (two of the lemonade cases ended up containing mixes of lemon- and limeade). I love how easy it is to please that man.
Safeway — $22.21
Sure, I felt awful but the Subaru needed fuel so I stopped at the Safeway to tank up. I pumped 10.430 gallons at $2.129 per gallon. The Impreza, purchased in June ‘07, has 35,884 miles on it. That’s a lot of mileage in 16 months.
Vitamin Cottage — $48.71
Yes, I was still sick and still felt half a step from collapsing but I had to take The Daughter over to a friend’s house so they could make a huge batch of cornbread for a chili cookout, so I stopped into the store again and picked up 4 more cases (48 bottles) of Santa Cruz lemonade. This time I was more careful to make sure there were no mixed cases.
Now the storage room is filled with 13 cases of Santa Cruz organic juice. I’m not a huge believer in extreme stocking-up but this is an exception. There’s not a doubt in my mind that we’ll consume every drop of that juice before it’s “best used by” date in July 2010.

$$: Shepard Fairey “Yes, We Did” Bumper Stickers
Posted on | November 7, 2008 | No Comments
MoveOn.org — $3.00
In September I bought six of the now-famous Shepard Fairey “Hope” Obama bumper stickers. Today I snagged five stickers featuring Fairey’s follow-up “Yes We Did” artwork.
The “Hope” stickers are all sold out. I’m thrilled that I managed to score some of this new design before it, too, sells out.
