Well, Happy (almost) New Year's everyone! I'm not staying up until midnight and I don't feel like programming in a post to publish itself at midnight (because, well, on a blog such as mine that would simply be silly) so I'll wish you all a happy "almost" new year today and another happy new year tomorrow.
You'll all be pleased to hear that I finished our banking today -- made deposits for myself, The Daughter, and The Son. The Son's was the most impressive -- another $203 saved up from allowance, Sunday childcare earnings, and a little Christmas money thrown in for good measure. He's well on track to saving a good deal more than his sister by the time he leaves for college; not that her savings weren't impressive.
After the bank I stopped at the tire place and asked them to evaluate the state of the Outback's tires. The fellow estimated I had about 6,000 miles left on them. I was happy with that. You might remember, we ended up having to replace The Husband's Impreza's tires after just after the car hit 30,000 miles. I was shocked and dismayed that the factory tires got so little mileage before needing to be replaced. The Outback's now at almost 38,000 miles. If I can get another 6,000 out of the tires that would put them at almost 44,000 miles -- not what I'd expect out of a set of tires I'd buy but apparently pretty good for a set of factory-installed tires.
My last stop was the grocery store. I'd committed to going to a New Year's Eve potluck at church and had said I'd take a vegetable. I figured I'd whip up a triple batch of twice-baked potatoes, have enough to share at the potluck, feed the family, and have enough left over to freeze a bunch for breakfast and snack over the next few weeks.
Kroger -- $7.78
- 2 blocks of Kroger sharp cheddar cheese -- $1.99/ea.
- avocado -- $0.77
- 5# bag of russet potatoes -- $2.99
Just as I did the other day, I applied another $4.00 loyalty reward check and put the balance on my gift card so my actual out-of-pocket expense was $0. In a best-of-all-worlds scenario (which I rarely manage), I happened to have sour cream and buttermilk left over from recent meals/baking projects -- just enough of each for a triple batch of twice-backed potatoes. Ah, life is good. At least sometimes.
