Art, Movies, and Mom
Today was the last of our three full days visiting my mom. We’ll leave here about noon tomorrow and drive back home to wind up the summer and get ready for school to start.
I’ve done some pretty serious shopping these past three days; I hope to give a full accounting when I get home. I always spend more money when I’m with my mom but I can’t yet figure out if I spend more with her because I put off purchases until I have her advice or if her horrible over-spending habits rub off on me when we’re together. I think it’s probably a bit of both.
Tonight I went to see Julie & Julia with my mom and The Son. Laugh out loud funny. If you haven’t seen it yet, go. My mom had just seen it last Monday with my sister and she said she loved it just as much this second time as she did the first time around. I’ve never heard The Son laugh as loudly and as long in a movie theater as he did tonight. The Daughter chose to stay at home — one less ticket to buy but I’m sorry she missed it. It made me think about blogging.… I’ll never be a Julie Powell but the movie did make me wonder if there’d been readers out there that I never knew about? And does it really matter? After all, I came back because I really missed blogging not because I felt I had an audience I needed to appease. Still, sometimes I do get a little freaked out that I’m just talking to myself, electronically and very publicly — well, publicly if there were a public paying attention.
Okay, enough of this. Tomorrow we’ll spend the morning with my mom. Then the kids and I will make the 550-mile drive back home where The Husband’s been dutifully keeping the home fires burning (though only figuratively, I hope).
I’ll leave you with a bit of a teaser — today I fell in love with the work of an artist who does the most amazing watercolors. Just beautiful. They really spoke to me. She had two pieces I particularly loved — both flowers — but I couldn’t decide which one I loved more. I’m going to sleep on it tonight and will go back tomorrow with the intention of buying one or the other. Which one will it be — the poppies or the lillies?
