Counting My Blessings: #6

In case you’re just joining me, here are links to my first five blessings:

It’s nearing 10pm.  The kitchen is spotless, the leftovers stored in the ‘fridge, and everyone’s wandered off to do their own thing until bedtime.

We enjoyed a very pleasant, very peaceful Thanksgiving celebration this year with just the four of us.  On Tuesday we all chimed in to create the menu:  pork chops, candied yams, artichokes, and buttermilk biscuits with an apple pie for dessert.

As always, The Husband got up and went to work this morning.  I slept in — until noon!!  I’m not sure I’ve ever slept that late in my entire adult life.  Apparently the kids woke up only an hour or so earlier than I did.  Once up, however, I went straight to work and cooked and baked and peeled apples for nearly 6 straight hours.

When it was finally time to eat, we blessed our meal (with two blessings, no less) and enjoyed a lively conversation and a leisurely meal.  After dinner, we watched a movie together — taking a mid-movie break for apple pie  :-)

Today’s blessing, #6, is my circumstances.

I have a roof over my head, a furnace to keep me warm, a refrigerator and cupboards full of food, hot and cold running water, two cars in the driveway, clothes in my closets, and shoes for my feet.  And money in the bank.  I have everything I need and most of everything I ever dreamed of wanting.

I am blessed by my circumstances.

I think about people who have so much less than I do or who struggle with burdens that would crush me and I wonder why I’m so blessed.  I don’t know the answer, but I’m grateful nonetheless.

If you’ll indulge me, I’ll conclude my Thanksgiving Day Counting-My-Blessings-#6 post by sharing both of the blessings our family said over our meal:

For health, and strength, and daily bread
We give our thanks, Oh Lord.

Earth who gives to us this food
Sun who makes it ripe and good,
Dear Sun, Dear Earth, by you we live
Our loving thanks to you we give.
