$$: Should Have Been a No-Spend Day

Posted on | November 5, 2008 |

Total Spent Today: $18.98

That’s right, today should have been a no-spend day — but it wasn’t.

On Monday evening, I made a late, quick run to the mall then hopped across the street to Whole Foods where I stocked up on dinner ingredients.  I’d planned to try a oven-baked potato chip recipe (not a flaming success) and make a meatloaf on Tuesday but The Son and I ended up spending the entire day and well into the evening volunteering at the polls.

So, Wednesday afternoon, I got started on dinner.  Figuring the potatoes would take the longest, I started with them.  Once I had them going, I pulled the package of ground beef out of the ‘fridge.  As soon as I picked up the package, I knew something was wrong.  The paper felt very thin and wet.  I opened the package to find 2lbs of unusable meat — all around the edges it was dry and (the ever technical term) yucky.  Turns out the paper wasn’t waxed (can’t imagine why) and he’d used just enough paper for one full layer.

I was so unhappy.  I’ve never been a fan of Whole Foods but I’m now at the point where I absolutely have to find an alternative!

Anyway, long story longer, I had to put my oven chip fiasco on hold so I could take care of the meat situation.  The Husband was all set to take The Son to his art class but since there’s a Whole Foods right across the street from the class, I said I’d do it.  So The Husband got out of his dress clothes and laid down for a nap while I ventured out into the chilly wind.  Oh joy.

While making the return, I went ahead and picked up a few extra items.   Then I dashed back home to finish the potatoes and pop the meatloaf in the oven before heading back out to fetch The Son.

Here’s what I picked up:

Whole Foods — $27.37

  • dozen Nest Fresh eggs — $3.69
  • 91% lean ground beef — $9.33
  • can of organic pumpkin — $2.50 (having dream of homemade pumpkin pie)
  • can of organic condensed milk — $3.00
  • 2 cartons of chocolate milk — $3.99/ea.
  • 2 bags credit – ($0.20)

Whole Foods — ($8.39) — credit for bad meat
