Someone Pinch Me!

I never thought it could happen.  No matter how much I wanted it to happen, no matter how much I knew it should happen, I never thought it would happen.

President-elect Barack Hussein Obama!!

The Son and I attended a 504 meeting this morning.  Then he went to class and I went to the local Obama office and offered my time and efforts in any manner they could use them as long as I didn't have to call people or knock on doors.  I was willing to drive voters to the polls, willing to do clerical work, anything.

They put me to work as a runner: delivering meals and water to two precincts and picking up poll results.  After the first run, I had a break at just the right time to run down and pick up The Son from class.  We went directly from his school back up to the Obama office and went right back to work.

The Son jumped right in; we did a second snack & water delivery run and poll results pick-up.  From there we were sent to the local library polling location where we worked the rest of the day as line comfort support handing out bottles of water, bags of snacks, and cookies to the voters standing in line waiting to vote.  It was an intensely gratifying experience and one that served to deepen our joy and excitement over the final election results.

I cannot properly describe how excited my children are.  They fully appreciate that they have just witnessed history being made.  In less than one year, they have been within 20 feet of the 44th President of The United States of America, less than 10 feet from our next First Lady, and shaken hands with the govenor, a senator, and a congressman from our state.  I am inordinately proud of the interest they have taken in the political process, of their desire to be personally involved in local and national politics, and of their ability to take an informed look at issues and make their own decisions.  I look forward to the interesting conversations we will have in the coming years.
