I’m wondering why you buy chocolate milk. My son likes it, too, but we buy Ovaltine, which has a lot vitamins and minerals in it, and add it to our regular organic milk when we want chocolate milk. Its one less carton in the fridge and healthier…just a suggestion!

    Leslie,

Thanks for your comment. I can certainly see your point about the extra carton(s) in the ‘fridge and it’s probably cheaper too.

But I’ll pass on the Ovaltine for three reasons:
    1) Convenience — the main reason I keep chocolate milk on hand is for The Husband. He likes chocolate milk on his cereal (Yuck! if you ask me). There’s no way he’d be interested in mixing up his own chocolate milk no matter the savings. If he were interested in mixing his own chocolate milk, I suppose we’d combine organic milk with the AH!laska organic chocolate syrup we keep on hand.
    2) Allergies — Miracle of miracles, I’m not allergic to any of the ingredients in the Horizon chocolate milk. Ovaltine is another matter altogether — it contains soy and malt. Not only am I allergic to those ingredients but they are two things I try to keep to a minimum in The Son’s diet as well. I have serious reservations about the amount of soy a child, esp. a teenaged boy, should consume. I doubt Ovaltine has a ton of soy in it, still, it’s an overprocessed, non-organic food product that I think we’re all better off without.
    3) Politics — Ovaltine is made by Nestle. I’m not militant about avoiding Nestle products, but I definitely try to avoid them. Given my first two reasons for not using Ovaltine, sticking to my loose boycott of Nestle is pretty easy with this particular product.
