Suburban Wife’s Daily Dollar Diary

a financial voyeur’s dream come true: all the intimate details of how, where, and why I spend money

$$: Church, Dining, Groceries, Cosmetics, & Swimming

Church — $50.00
It’s been weeks since I’ve made an offering at church — either because I didn’t attend (after my surgery) or because I didn’t have a check with me.  Today I wrote an extra large offering check to make up for all of those skipped weeks.

Whole Foods — $31.67
The kids are definitely preferring Whole Foods to Einstein’s Bagels these days as their after-church-sustenance stop.  We bought:

  • @2# of 91% lean ground beef (for a meatloaf tonight) — $9.80
  • a box of microwave popcorn packages – $2.99
  • an avocado roll sushi tray (for The Son) — $4.75
  • a vegetable combo sushi tray (I ate the avocado rolls; The Daughter ate the rest) — $5.95
  • a house brand soda pop — $0.59
  • a red raspberry spritzer — $1.39
  • a lip gloss (that The Daughter just had to have — don’t worry, it comes out of her cosmetics budget) — $4.95

Vitamin Cottage — $19.94
Once I got home and started thinking about what I was really going to fix for dinner, I realized that I was missing several ingredients for tonight’s menu of meat loaf, broccoli, and twice-baked potatoes.  Then I made the mistake of calling The Husband at work and discussing dinner with him and the menu got changed from twice-baked potatoes for dinner to twice-baked potatoes to be consumed on some future date (say, for lunches next week) and pan-fried fingerling potatoes for dinner tonight.  I also decided to add a delectable and irresistible Caramel Apple Cake for dessert.

So I needed:

  • bag of Bob’s Red Mill unbleached flour (didn’t I just buy a bag recently; guess I’m baking a lot) — $3.39
  • Nancy’s organic sour cream — $1.49
  • Organic Valley heavy cream — $2.99
  • Organic Valley buttermilk — $2.95
  • Organic Valley salted butter — $3.99 (saved $1.36)
  • 2.12# organic Granny Smith apples — $4.64

Swim Team — $485.00
The Daughter recently joined a competitive swim team.  This charge covers the $150 fee to the national swim association (an annual fee), the $55 annual team registration fee, and this month’s and next month’s pool fees.  Swimming is not an inexpensive sport.  I sent in all of the paperwork about two weeks ago but I only just received confirmation from the team that the charge had been sent through.

A few days ago The Daughter signed up for her first meet.  It only just occurred to me that she doesn’t have a team suit yet and apparently it hadn’t occurred to her either.  I imagine you’ll be seeing that expense listed in my daily $$ postings before too long.
