a financial voyeur’s dream come true: all the intimate details of how, where, and why I spend money

$$: Starbucks, Pizza & an animated Zombie-Hand-in-a-Bowl

Posted on | October 11, 2008 |

Whoo Hoo.  I actually had a car at my disposal today.  This is, I believe, the first Saturday in about two months that I’ve had a car to use.  The Daughter is still fighting some sort of back-to-school-sniffles and since there were no tournaments and no college fairs to attend today, she stayed home, cleaned the kitchen (what a nice surprise that was!), did some homework, and overdosed on Netflix Instant Watch TV shows.

The Son and I were less domestic.  We did something completely out of character and way out of our respective comfort zones — we went canvassing.  Door to door in the freezing, drizzling weather knocking on 51 doors, making actual contact with 11 people, making sure that everyone had their mail-in ballots and knew that, with the size of this year’s extra-long ballot, they should use two stamps to mail it in.  It was actually less fun but a more satisfying experience than I had expected.  The Son agreed and he and I plan to do more canvassing on our own in the coming weeks [since this was our first time, we were partnered up with an experienced canvasser to show us the ropes].

Starbucks — $2.85

A hot chocolate for The Son.  We’d just spent two hours walking around (see above) and we were cold and wet.  We had to return to Starbucks to turn in our tally sheet so I had no problems complying when The Son asked for a hot treat.

Kroger — $27.23

  •  2 Digiorno frozen pizzas for dinner — $6.99/ea (saved $0.30/ea.)
  • one of those kitschy Halloween treat bowls with the animated green hand that moves when someone reaches into the bowl — $11.99

[We bought one of these bowls about 8 years ago and have used it every Halloween since but the past two years the hand has been deteriorating badly -- either from repeated movement or breakdown of the rubberized fabric.  Our family isn't really big on kitschy holiday decorations but that silly bowl is a family favorite.  I considered replacing it last year but kept wondering if we were attached to the bowl because of the bowl itself and the current pleasure we derive from it or if it was more of a nostalgia thing since the kids were both much younger when we first acquired it.  There's definitely the risk that the new bowl will never hold the place in our hearts that the original bowl did but I decided that for $11.99 (plus tax) we could afford to find out.]
