Suburban Wife’s Daily Dollar Diary

a financial voyeur’s dream come true: all the intimate details of how, where, and why I spend money

I’m back? Yes. I’m back!!

Hi everyone.  Or should that be, hi anyone?  I’m back.

I’ve really missed blogging.  I’ve missed the discipline that the daily accounting of my expenses afforded.  I’ve missed the outlet for thoughts and feelings.

What’s been up?  Where have I been?  Well, although it’s been a busy summer and we’ve had some major happenings in our household, the reason behind my disappearance was simple — The Daughter’s summer task was to  take responsibility for the family budgeting.  She was supposed to take over my daily budgeting tasks in the YNAB program, keep track of our spending, and make decisions about how to allocate our family funds over the summer.  Because I wasn’t handling the receipts each day, I quickly fell out of the habit of logging my daily expenses on my blog.

Well, our summer experiment failed — but not because The Daughter wasn’t up to the task of the family budgeting.  I think it was more due to the fact that the job was maybe too big, a little too undefined, the summer was a little too busy and filled with distractions, and maybe because I didn’t start out with clearly defined parameters of her job and the consequences if she didn’t keep up with it.

Anyway, I’ve missed blogging.  And I’ve missed keeping track of my daily expenses.  I don’t know how much I’ll try to back-track and cover all of the daily accounting that I’ve missed.  My receipts and my YNAB program are, admittedly, a huge mess right now.  As I said, it’s been a busy summer and a chaotic fall.

So, in case I decide to forget all the water that’s passed under the bridge (and all of the cash that’s flowed out of the wallet) and start fresh with tomorrow’s expenses, here’s a quick overview of what you’ve missed:

  • The Daughter took a fall and ended up in UrgentCare - again.  Co-pays, medical supplies, meds, crutches, etc;
  • We attended a family reunion;
  • Almost a month of houseguests;
  • More home improvements — landscaping, a new fence, a new garage door, painting the house;
  • Automobile repairs;
  • A quick vacation to visit my sister;
  • The end of The Son’s “cello” era;
  • The Daughter’s return to competitive swimming;
  • Moving forward on an Asperger’s Syndrome diagnosis;
  • A broken left clavicle;
  • Thyroid surgery;
  • A new school year for both children — each in a different location.

And those are just the things I can think of off the top of my head    :-p

Although I plan to come back and resume my daily $$ logs, I think things will have to change a bit too.  I feel the need to write a little more about my thoughts, questions, and worries about money.  Maybe share some thoughts about the economy.  Just, in general, let a little more of me come through in my posts.

It’s late now and I’m really tired and in quite a bit of pain (had surgery on Monday).  But I feel good having made this decision and I didn’t want to wait to share it with the blogging world at-large.  Thanks to everyone who has written (or didn’t write but did wonder) about where I was and how things were going.

    So glad you are back. I couldn’t bring myself to take you off of my Google Reader. I enjoy your posts. I almost emailed you once to see if everything was okay with your family. Hope you recover easily from your surgery. I have thyroid issues, but nothing as severe. Take care and looking forward to your future posts.

    I was so happy to see some new posts today! I was concerned when you hadn’t updated in so long.

    My husband thinks it’s weird that I’m interested in how another family spends money. I enjoy reading about your reasoning behind the purchases that you make. I wish I could be so disciplined as to log my daily receipts, but I’m not there yet.

    Thanks for sharing!
