Consumer Tip: REI Nalgene Water Bottle Return Policy
Posted on | May 18, 2008 |
All of you Water Bottle users — here’s an important consumer tip:
If you purchased your BPA-containing Nalgene water bottles from REI, you can return them for a full refund!
I dropped by my local REI store today to replace my children’s Nalgene water bottles since all of our old ones contain BPA. I happened to mention to a clerk that I wasn’t too excited to be replacing all of their bottles — especially since I’d bought a bunch of them less than a year ago.
Imagine my delight when he responded by telling me that if I bought them through REI I could return them for a full refund. Even better, he said that even if I didn’t have the receipt they’d be able to look them up in my purchase history and issue the refund.
I have an errand to run in that area tomorrow so I’ve packed up all of our old Nalgene bottles for return. If I experience any trouble with the return/refund, I’ll be sure to let you know. Otherwise, this looks like a real customer-relations coup for REI (a fabulous company with an incredible guarantee/refund policy in general).

[...] What’s a mom to do? I’d always been under the impression that the hard plastic bottles didn’t leech chemicals the way the soft bottles do. They certainly don’t leech that awful plastic taste. When I started reading about the potential BPA issues in our old bottles, I knew I had to bite the bullet and replace them — even though I bought new ones not so very long ago. As a very unexpected bonus, it turns out I’ll be able to return the old bottles for a refund (see my earlier post). [...]

That’s great news for those of us that have to replace old Nalgene bottles .. I’d just gotten new ones for the family at Christmas time thinking that the hard plastics were better than the softer plastic of the sippy cups we’ve been trying to phase out. I think we’re leaning toward the Sigg stainless bottles .. they come in such cute designs for the kids! Although the Nalgene Grip and Gulp Tritan bottles we have now are now BPA free .. so I guess the kids will decide (like they always do

Rebekah,
My problem with the stainless bottles is the small neck. One, the kids can’t add ice cubes — which they like to do as it helps keep the water cool over a period of time. Two, I can’t fit a scrubbie brush down into the bottle.
The latter issue is, for me, the biggest. The Son rarely puts anything but water in his bottles. The Daughter, however, puts juice and tea, etc. in hers. Even water, if left stagnant for a time will start to grow unwelcome “things.” I like knowing that the inside of those bottles is the very cleanest I can get them. Even if I’m not putting a brush inside, for instance when we put the bottle in the dishwasher, I feel better knowing that the water’s getting up inside those wide-mouthed bottles and santitizing them.

Sigh .. I know what you mean about the narrow necks! With our current stainless bottles (for DH and myself) I just drink water but my husband like the K2O water powders and for whatever reason they don’t break down well in cold water. Putting the stainless in the dishwasher doesn’t sound like a good idea to me because of the detergent (and I wouldn’t put my stainless cookware in there) but a bit of boiling water and some Dawn or baking soda shaken well cleans and kills any germies lingering. As for the ice my mother in law got us all the ice stick trays meant for water bottles and they work nicely since we have them on hand and we don’t use the ice machine in our freezer.
I’m posting a link to your site about the REI refund, if that’s not cool let me know and I’ll pull it
