Day 224: More Groceries

Because I seem to have a hard and fast rule that I will ALWAYS walk out of a grocery store forgetting something, I found myself, yet again, making a trip to pick up just a few essentials.  Today it was ground beef.  I bought some yesterday but I bought it without a specific purpose in mind.  Then today, when trying to decide what to make for dinner, I realized that I didn't have enough ground beef for the spaghetti and meatballs I wanted to serve.  Naturally, I found a few other things that I needed at the same time.  But rest assured, I'm sure I forgot something important -- I just haven't remembered what it was yet.

Kroger -- $55.67

  • 45-day supply of Claritin -- $24.99 (saved $5.00)
  • 4 #s of Horizon salted butter -- $3.99/ea (saved $1.50/ea)
  • 4 cans of Muir Glen tomato sauce -- $1.89/ea.
  • 1/2# of Coleman ground beef -- $3.17
  • loaf of french bread -- $1.39 (special treat for the family -- I made garlic bread)

I just wanted to let you know that Claritin is available in a generic form at almost any drugstore. It is usually next to the Claritin and is called non-drowsy allergy medicine. The active ingredient is Loratadine 10 mg., same as Claritin. Often the bottle (or package) says “compare to Claritin” in small type. I have been using it for years with good results. The price savings can be significant and it can be purchased in bottles instead of those foil things.

    Jean,

Thanks for the tip. In all honesty, I’ve been afraid to try the generic allergy meds. I have little to no drug tolerance (seriously) and Claritin is one of the very, very few (read: maybe the only) drug I’ve taken that doesn’t bring with it more side effects than benefits. It doesn’t make me drowsy; nor does it give me a dry mouth (common side effects). All it does is keep me from oozing from my nose and eyes 11 months out of the year. I suppose I should give it a try though — I can always go back to Claritin if the generic gives me trouble.

I agree I love the Claritin too. I took Zyrtec once this spring and felt like I was in a fog all day. If you like the name brand, coupons appear in the Sunday newspaper with some regularity. I buy the name brand syrup for my daughter because she is very picky and I don’t want to get a revolt if she doesn’t like the taste of the generic brand.
