Day 217: Two Tunes and a Trip to the Thrift Store

I was thinking that today was officially a no-spend day but I was in error.  I’d forgotten about my spur-of-the-moment but very well-timed trip to the thrift store this afternoon.

This morning I bought two songs off iTunes today though they don’t really count because I didn’t spend any money.  I bought the songs with my iTunes store credit.

I downloaded:

The Daughter, who has much more iTunes store credit than I do, downloaded Silver Lining by Rilo Kiley.

I absolutely love, love, love the Apple Time Capsule I bought a couple of weeks ago.  I hope to give a more extensive follow-up product review of it, and a few other purchases, sometime soon.  But the reason I bring it up right now is because I’ve consolidated all of our music onto the remote hard drive and adjusted everyone’s iTunes settings such that new songs automatically get stored on the central hard-drive, not our individual computers’ hard-drives.  Then I simply authorized all three machines on all three iTunes accounts.  This new arrangement has taken the ease and convenience of our iTunes experience to a whole new level.

What I almost forgot to report was an impromptu trip to the thrift store after dropping The Son off at the baseball park.  I’ve had absolutely no luck in finding a black cotton turtleneck shirt for The Son to wear under his baseball jersey.  His league issues the boys sleeveless jerseys and the boys have to supply their own black shirts.  Because of the spring and summer weather around here, he needs short sleeves, long sleeves, and a turtleneck.  I can’t imagine what I was thinking but I forgot to make sure he has a black turtleneck before the stores cleared their stores of their winter stock.

All of a sudden yesterday it occurred to me to check the thrift store.  I knew we’d have to compromise on the brand/quality but I was willing to do that since he’ll only need to wear it two or three times.  Then, this winter I can make sure to buy him a nicer black turtleneck that he can use for baseball next spring if he decides to continue playing ball.

So, after dropping him off before his game, I made a quick thrift store run.  There was exactly one black turtleneck in his size (a men’s medium).  It’s nothing special but it is 98% cotton and it will work in a pinch.

Then, because I can’t just walk out of a thrift store (or any store for that matter) without poking around a bit, I checked out the selection of men’s pants.  Would you believe I found two pair of men’s khakis in size 30/32?!  One is a pair of Banana Republic chinos just like the pair I bought two weeks ago and the second pair is from the Gap.  Yes, they all stink of perfumed detergent or softener but I couldn’t pass them up — other than the stink they were in beautiful condition.  And the best part?  All three had orange tags which meant they were all three on sale for 1/2 off.  All three items, including tax, cost me $8.61.

For baseball related clothes , have you tried a used sporting good store? My friend’s son plays baseball. And she always buys her son the $$$ black nike under the uniform shirts. When her son has outgrown them she re-sells them to a buy it agian style sporting store. She usally buys the Nike sports turtlnecks for $25–30 @ a Nike outlet store.

    Hi Kristine,

Thanks for your comment. The problem with the Nike or UnderArmour type sports clothing is that The Son hates them. He won’t wear anything on his upper body that is form-fitting as he says it tickles his armpits. Believe me, I’ve tried more than once to get him to try on an UnderArmour turtleneck but without any success. Just another part of the difficulties presented by a kid with tactile sensitivities.
