Day 155: Groceries, Books, & Croc Messenger Bag

Posted on | February 3, 2008 |

Another long day of sorting, cleaning, errands, and family.  We all got up before the sunrise to get my sister and niece to the airport for their flight home.  My mom and I spent the rest of the morning sorting through books.  Then we ran some errands, picked up some groceries, and went to my middle sister’s house where I spent all afternoon making a double batch of buttermilk biscuits and a double batch of oatmeal cookies while visiting with my nephews, my sister, and my brother-in-law.  My mom and sister did some decorating.  In the evening,  we looked over their floorplans for a wished-for house addition and I provided some one-on-one tutoring with the YNAB budgeting software* that my sister’s having a little trouble getting the hang of.

Health Food Store — $76.89 (some of which will be reimbursed by my mom and my sister)

  • organic unbleached white flour — $4.99
  • organic rolled oats — $4.19
  • baking powder — $4.79
  • Hain canola mayonnaise — $5.79
  • Organic Valley buttermilk — $2.99
  • Crofter’s grape jelly — $2.99
  • 1lb butter — $4.99
  • Sleepy Time tea — $3.39 [for my mom]
  • Soy-Ginger salad dressing — $1.99 (saved $1.50) [mom]
  • deli meal — $8.72 [mom]
  • cheddar cheese — $5.79 [for my sister]
  • Brown Cow maple yogurt — $3.79 [sister]
  • 1lb butter — $4.99 [sister]
  • Organic Valley half and half– $3.49 [sister]
  • Organic Valley whole milk — $2.29 [sister]
  • vanilla almond milk — $2.49 [sister]
  • fresh ground peanut butter — $2.89 [sister]
  • plastic container — $0.69 [sister]
  • honey — $4.99 [sister]

Health Food Store — $12.57

  • tuna — $1.99
  • brown sugar — $4.59
  • vanilla extract — $5.99

Groceries are so much more expensive here than they are at home!

Dillard’s — $20.57
During our morning errands we stopped at Dillard’s.  My mom needed a new eyeglasses chain and I needed a bathroom break  ;-)

Naturally, we had to check out the sales and I stumbled upon a Crocs messenger bag marked down to half-price with another 30% off.  The bag has a padded computer compartment and I’ve been looking for a new computer bag for some time so I snapped it up.

Book Store — $0.00
Our first errand of the day had been to take about 12 bags filled with books to a local used book store.  My mom was disappointed with the number of books they wouldn’t buy but she still ended up with about $120.00 in store credit.  While waiting for them to sift through her books, we perused their shelves and found a CD version of Bruce Catton’s The Civil War and a book on the history of presidential campaigns.  The CD is for me and the book is for The Son.  I traded these purchases for the groceries I bought for my mom which is why this entry is listed as a zero dollar expense.

We also filled up my mom’s gas tank but I let her pay for that since we were using the car for her errands, not mine.
