Day 142: Gas & Essentials

Posted on | January 21, 2008 |

Happy Martin Luther King Jr. Day.  The children and I spent the afternoon with some homeschooled friends we haven’t seen for almost two years.  As we do every year, I read that incredible “I Have a Dream” speech out loud at our dinner table.  Although I’ve read that speech every year for at least 10 years, each year I am moved anew by how incredibly poetic and moving those words are.

The gathering was a potluck of sorts.  Our contribution was a large batch of buttermilk biscuits.  We had to stop at the grocery store to pick up some fruit spreads and some drinks to add our offerings.

Kroger — $40.98

  • 2 lbs Horizon butter – $5.49/ea.
  • 2 jars Cascadian Farm fruit spead — $2.50/ea. (saved $0.69/ea.)
  • 12 bottles of Santa Cruz Raspberry lemonade — $12.00/case (saved $20.28/case)
  • 12 bottles of Santa Crus Strawberry lemonade — $12.00/case (saved $20.28/case)

Safeway — $52.61
I had just enough gas to get us to our afternoon gathering but had to tank up before we could head home.  It was so incredibly bitter cold.  Too cold to snow, really.  I pumped 19.859 gallons @ $2.649/gallon.  My odometer read 119,172.
