Day 103: This is the Day we Baked our Cakes

Posted on | December 13, 2007 |

Our “secret” family Pound Cake recipe is delicious, loaded with sugar and butter, and labor-intensive.  I spent the better part of the morning and early afternoon baking and got two cakes baked.  That’s 2 down; at least 2 more to go.  I’d like to make 3 or 4 more, if possible.  The house smells so very yummy!

After picking up The Daughter this evening, we made a quick stop at Red Lobster.  She and her brother agreed to go halves on a $30. gift card for their dad for Christmas (no ulterior motives here ;-) ).

On the way home, we stopped at Kroger.  I needed one thing and she needed one thing — we ended up with a full cart.  ;-)  I spent a total of $50.86 on:

  • 1/2 lb of Hungarian unbleached flour — $2.00 (saved $0.69)
  • 10 lbs of GW sugar — $5.49 (saved $0.50) [how will I ever use 10#s of sugar?]
  • Kroger paper plates — $5.59 (yeah, I know, I know but I’ve got to host a big family party soon)
  • box of Clementines — $4.88 (saved $2.11; plus additional $1.00 saved with coupon)
  • 3 Oral B toothbrushes — $2.50/ea (saved $0.49/ea.)
  • 5 boxes of Kashi Cinnamon Harvest cereal — $3.00/ea (saved $0.69/ea) [I LOVE this cereal; when I noticed that it was on sale for $6.00/2 boxes, I bought every box left on the shelf.]
  • bag of Christmas M&M’s — $2.99 ($0.40)
  • bag of Reese’s bells — $2.00 (saved $1.39)*
  • box of little candy canes — $1.50 (saved $0.19)*
  • box of small chocolate santas — $2.99*

* items selected by The Daughter for tomorrow’s and next week’s Secret Santa gifts for her classmate.

I saved a total of $11.20 between my Kroger loyalty card and my manufacturer coupon.  That’s 18% off my total order.
