Day 81: More Last Minute Thanksgiving Shopping

Published by Suburban Wife at 11:25 pm under food, Daily $$'s

Yeah, I’m one of those people who always forgets a few items and has to go back to the store at least once each day after completing her big Thanksgiving Day-prep grocery shopping.

I did my big shopping yesterday.  Went back again today and, honestly, could have gone back again this evening but the cold, snowy weather induced me to find a work-around.  I’m pretty sure I’ll have to go back again tomorrow morning before they close for the day.

I had some apples that I’d planned to use in my apple pie.  I got them from a friend who got them from a co-worker who has an apple tree.  But last night I noticed that they’d gone bad.  Could have had something to do with the fact that I’d left them in a plastic bag inside my knitting bag for three days.  I don’t know ;-)  What mattered was that the apples I bought yesterday were intended simply to supplement the free apples I’d gotten.

So I went back to Kroger today for more apples ($3.01) and naturally picked up a few extra items that popped into my mind like whipping cream ($3.49) — duh, ya think maybe since I’m taking pies I might want to take whipping cream? — and another dozen Nest Fresh eggs ($4.39) — they were all out of white so I had to pay extra for brown.

The Son and I decided yesterday to add a Lemon Meringue pie to the menu.  I went hunting for a recipe today and noticed that in addition to lemon juice most recipes call for lemon zest too.  Ugh.  That would require yet another trip.  I might go but then I might just decide to see what my pie tastes like sans zest.

But even if I forgo the lemon zest, I’ll probably have to go back because I don’t think I bought enough yams for candied yams.  I’m not sure what I was thinking of when I bought the yams but I’m pretty sure I wasn’t thinking about how many people I have to feed with this dish.  I bought five good-sized yams which would have been more than enough for our family but can’t possibly be enough for the 15-18 people expected at tomorrow’s feast.

I do, at times, envy super-organized and efficient people.
